Breeding drake green-winged teal small tufts on the backs of their necks. White vertical stripes are visible on the sides of their vermiculated chests. Eurasian, or Common, Green-winged Teal (A. c. crecca) drakes lack this feature but have a horizontal stripe consisting of their tertial feathers. The 2 subspecies otherwise appear identical. Other useful identification characteristics are diagonal creamy stripe on each side of the tail and green specula, which are readily seen in flight. Green-winged Teal during the breeding season take advantage of Alaska, most of Canada, and down into the northern half of the United States. Commonly found along river deltas, this species will breed in dense vegetation, where they may also forage. They also use woody or burned areas and use the weedy vegetation as cover. The expansive area used by Green-winged teal during the wintering period follows along the west coast of Canada, the west coast of the Unites States (and the southern half as well), and down into the majority of Mexico. During this time, this species will choose any type of shallow wetland where it is common to see them foraging in flooded rice fields.
The Green-winged Teal’s diet depends on seeds and aquatic invertebrates but truly are not picky and will eat what is available. As with many other ducks, this species will feed in shallow waters or agricultural fields, however, they also take advantage of foraging on mudflats and probe the ground in search of any invertebrate close enough to the surface.
Green-winged teal are a common bird in North America and have doubled the long-term average for their species since 2015. Currently it is estimated that there are 4 million breeding individuals.
