There is nowhere other
than Alberta, Canada, in North America to hunt native, free-ranging
bison in their natural habitat. Wood bison have existed here
forever and were never displaced by humans.
Our bison hunts occur during February and March, May and June.
Bison hunting can be arduous. It is common to travel up to 50 miles
per day by snowmobile or quad. The snow is generally 1-3 feet deep.
Expect winter temperatures in February and March to range from -40F
to +10F. Your days will be filled with excitement tracking one of
the rarest big game animals remaining, the legendary native
buffalo. The hunt can be long and difficult, but for the passionate
trophy hunter, it can be rewarding like hardly any other.
Wildlife studies have
shown that many bulls in this area are old; the trophy potential is
very high. Though these are not pure-strain wood bison, bulls weigh
up to 2600 pounds (cows about 1500 pounds.). The sight of a
magnificent bison towering 7 feet tall is one few hunters ever
forget. Capes and horns are easily exported to the United
States. Timber wolves inhabit the same vast region as the Bison and
can be hunted with fair success at any time during the hunt.
Bison hunters are lodged in a small house camp with 3 bedrooms
to accommodate 5. The camp has wood heat, hot and cold
water. Hearty, home-cooked meals provide welcome respite from
the cold during the winter months.
These hunts take place on private property adjacent to, and
across the Salt River from, Wood Buffalo National Park,
which was established in 1922 to provide sanctuary for the
largets free-range, self-regulating herd of native woodland bison
in the world. The landcover is primarily northern boreal
woodlands, with numerous opening that were established to timothy
hay over a century ago, and provides the most nutritious
browse available to nearby woodland bison. Hunting methods
involve quad riding or snow mobiling through the area and locating
foraging bison within these openings.
This Canada bison hunt is the best offered anywhere.
